One Thing Needful

3. The Heart Decorated

Just what are the blessings of having a pure heart? I mean why would you want to go to all the trouble anyway? First is the blessing of spiritual sensitivity. It’s a sensitivity that comes from a single focus. (Psalm 27:4) “I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking Him in His temple.” David came to the place in his life where all he desired was one thing. One thing was all he asked from the Lord, and that was simply to gaze on the beauty of the Lord in His temple. It came down to a single focus. He was locked in on the Lord. And the place He sought the Lord was in His dwelling place. He didn’t expect the Lord to meet him on his terms, but he sought the Lord where the Lord dwells—in righteousness and holiness. When you heart is pure, the result will be spiritual sensitivity not only from a single focus, but that single focus will lead to a simple life. Psalm 73:25 “Whom do I have in heaven but You? And I desire nothing on earth but You.” How life is simplified when we desire nothing of this world. How complicated is your life because of your desire? How much grief have you caused yourself and others because of the things you desire? Do you understand this world has nothing for you? Purity of heart brings about a single focus and a simple life. My former pastor, Tom Elliff, said it this way: If a man could get to the place in life where all he wanted was all God wanted, then all his life he’d have all he wanted.

Not only will you have a spiritual sensitivity, but you will have a worthy walk. Paul’s prayer for the church at Colossae was that they would walk in a way that was worthy of the Lord. Listen to Colossians 1:9. “…We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.” The evidence of a worthy walk is to fully please God by bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of God. If you are growing in the knowledge of God you’ll bear fruit. If you’re bearing fruit you will fully please God. We know that without faith it is impossible to please Him. (Hebrews 11:6) So a worthy walk is a walk of faith; that entrusting of our lives to Him on a daily basis.

Not only will you be spiritually sensitive, not only will you have a worthy walk, but you will enjoy a rich reward and that’s in the relationship. In Matthew 5:8 Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.” Only the pure in heart will see God. Remember? Without holiness no one will see the Lord. When your heart, when your desire is fixed exclusively on the Lord, He will purify your heart and you will see Him not only in eternity but here on earth. (ref. I John 3:2-3) In eternity your desire will be fulfilled because you will dwell in the house of the Lord forever, gazing on His beauty, seeking Him in His temple. And His desire will be fulfilled because He has you to share His heart with for all eternity. Here on earth, not only will you see His work in your life and in the lives of others because of your spiritual sensitivity, but you will see Him because He will reveal Himself to you in depths you never expected as you live a life in communion with Him.
