One Thing Needful

5. Conclusion

Do you see how the application of God’s Word purifies your heart and changes you at the deepest level? Do you see how conflicting desires keep us from being totally abandoned to the ways and purposes of God? Is there anything in you that cries out for that kind of relationship—one that’s more satisfying than anything this world has to offer?

If the answer to these questions is no, check your heart. You’ll find trash. If you’re like Adam, hiding from God, afraid to meet Him face to face, check your heart. You’ll find trash. You might be overwhelmed thinking, “Where do I even start?” You start on your face before His throne pouring your heart out to Him. I have found when in honesty you confess to him what’s in your heart, be it confusion, or despair, or a lack of understanding, whatever it is, if you just tell Him He will help you. You may be like me and pray, “Father, I don’t even know if I’m willing to do Your will, but I am willing for You to make me willing.”

All you have to do is open the treasure box. He will reveal one at a time the trash that needs to be purged. A box is not a treasure box because it’s filled with treasure, but it’s a treasure box because it’s made for treasure. Your heart was made for the treasure of purity and holiness and love—God’s love. “Above all else, guard your heart, because it is the source of life.”

Jesus, You are my One Desire, my Sovereign King
Lord of my heart, not just a part, Ruler Supreme
You have crafted my heart for Your pleasure, O Lord
I rejoice in Your love; over me You sing.
Jesus, You are my One Desire; thank You for loving me
